Learn

Start from the dictionary form and use the same three verb groups you learned for ます. The endings change differently this time, so do not simply attach ない to the ます stem.

change the final kana to its a-row counterpart; う becomes わ

Exception

  • — The negative of ある is ない, not あらない.

飲のまない and 飲のみません express the same basic negative meaning, but differ in politeness. Use ません for a polite standalone sentence with someone you do not know well. Plain forms also appear inside many grammatical patterns, even in otherwise polite speech.

Examples

  • I don’t drink coffee.

  • I’m not going to school.

  • I don’t watch TV.

  • There is no time.
