Lesson 50 · plain past verbs

The plain past: た and なかった

The sound changes you learned for the te-form also give you the plain past.

Learn

Use the same sound changes as the te-form, then replace て with た or で with だ: 食たべて → 食たべた, 飲のんで → 飲のんだ, 行いって → 行いった.

For the negative past, start with the ない form and change ない to なかった: 飲のまない → 飲のまなかった, 行いかない → 行いかなかった, 食たべない → 食たべなかった.

nonpast
past

Do not make the plain past by attaching た to the ます stem: 飲のんだ, not 飲のみた. If you are unsure, form 飲のんで first, then change the ending to だ.

Examples

  • I watched a movie yesterday.

  • I drank coffee.

  • I didn’t go to school.

  • I didn’t eat anything.
