Learn

Both particles connect nouns. と presents a complete list for the statement; や presents examples. Choose according to what you mean, not according to which particle is more polite.

a complete list

examples

a dog and a cat [the items being listed]

dogs, cats, and other animals

Which should I use?

  • Am I naming the whole set relevant here?と: these are the items in the list.
  • Am I giving only some examples?

A “complete list” is limited by the conversation’s context. If you are naming what you are ordering now, と joins the items in that order. Use や when you are giving examples, such as drinks you enjoy.

Examples

  • I’m buying a book and a pen.

  • I’m buying books, pens, and other things.

  • I like drinks such as coffee and tea.
