Making requests with ください

Ask someone to do something, or ask for something you want.

Learn

Add ください to a verb’s te-form: 待まって ください means “Please wait,” 見みて ください means “Please look,” and 話はなして ください means “Please speak.” These are polite but direct requests.

Keep two patterns separate. For an action, use te-form + ください with nothing between them. For a thing, use noun + を + ください: コーヒー を ください means “A coffee, please.” Do not insert を after the te-form as in 見みて を ください.

These patterns are useful in cafés, stores, and everyday instructions. Polite grammar alone does not make every request appropriate: your tone, the situation, and how much you are asking of someone still matter.

Examples

  • Please wait.

  • Please look at the book.

  • Water, please.

  • Please speak in Japanese.
