For Group 1, the last kana tells you which change to make. Practice a few patterns and one common exception.

う・つ・る → って

- 待つ → 待って
- 帰る → 帰って
む・ぶ・ぬ → んで

く → いて; ぐ → いで
- 書く → 書いて
- 泳ぐ → 泳いで
す → して
- 話す → 話して
Exception
- 行く → 行って — 行(い)く is irregular here: use 行(い)って, not 行いて.
Practice the ending groups aloud: u-tsu-ru → って, mu-bu-nu → んで, ku → いて, gu → いで, su → して. Apply these changes to the dictionary form of a Group 1 verb, not to its ます form.
Some forms end in で rather than て, but they still belong to the “te-form.” These are established sound-change patterns; learn them with familiar verbs such as 飲む → 飲んで. You do not have to guess a pronunciation change each time.
