Learn the special readings for dates 1–10, such as ついたち and ふつか. From 11 onward, most dates end in にち, with special forms for the 14th, 20th, and 24th. Also notice しち and く in dates ending in 7 and 9.

When to use it
Calendar dates, such as the fifth or twentieth of the month. Many readings also count a duration in days: 5日間 is five days. One day is an important exception: 一日 is いちにち as a duration, not ついたち.

Patterns to remember

  • Learn dates 1–10 as whole words. Repeating them in order can help you remember the special forms.
  • The 14th and 24th keep よっか: 14 = じゅうよっか, 24 = にじゅうよっか.
  • The 20th has the special reading はつか. Learn it as a whole word.
  • Most other dates use a number followed by にち. Learn the listed readings for dates ending in 7 and 9 as well.
