Learn

After the name of a companion, と means “with”: けんさん と 行いきます means “I’m going with Ken.” You already know と as a way to join nouns with “and.”

The surrounding sentence tells you which use is intended. パン と お茶ちゃ lists “bread and tea.” 友達ともだち と 飲のみます describes drinking “with a friend.” This use of と is for a companion, not a tool such as the pen in “write with a pen.”

To ask who is coming along, put 誰だれ before と: 誰だれ と 行いきます か means “Who are you going with?” The question word stays in the companion’s position.

Examples

  • I’m watching a movie with Ken.

  • I’m going to school with Maria.

  • Who are you going with?

  • I’m having coffee with a friend.
