Learn

Put と between nouns to mean “and”: お茶おちゃ と パン, or けんさん と マリア. For a longer list, repeat と between each pair of items.

English “and” can join nouns, verbs, or whole sentences. This use of と joins nouns. You cannot use it to translate the “and” in “I study and work”; Japanese connects those actions differently.

A list with と presents the items as a complete set for what you are saying. お茶おちゃ と パン を ください asks for tea and bread. Later you will learn a different particle for listing examples such as “tea, bread, and other things.”

Examples

  • Ken and Maria are students.

  • Tea and bread, please.

  • a shirt and pants
