Lesson 28 · wanting an action

Wanting to do something: たい

Attach to a verb to say what you want to do.

Learn

Start with the ます form, remove ます and add たい: 飲のみます → 飲のみたい, 食たべます → 食たべたい, 行いきます → 行いきたい.

The たい ending changes like an i-adjective. Use たくない for “do not want to” and たかった for “wanted to.” Do not use たい じゃ ない for this negative.

Use たい for your own wishes and to ask what the listener wants. Reporting someone else’s private wishes generally needs more context or a different construction. In these examples, が marks the thing you want to eat, drink, or watch; you will also encounter を with たい.

Examples

  • I want to watch a movie.

  • I want to drink water.

  • I don’t want to go to school.

  • What do you want to eat?
