Lesson 38 · direction versus destination

⚖️ へ vs. に

Choose either for a simple destination, but keep for the other patterns you have learned.

Learn

Both 学校がっこう へ 行いきます and 学校がっこう に 行いきます can mean “I’m going to school.” The emphasis differs slightly—direction with へ, destination with に—but both work in this example.

に has other uses that へ cannot replace in these patterns. 家いえ に います describes location, and 月曜日げつようび に 会あいます marks time. Do not change those に particles to へ just because both particles can occur with 行いく.

Ask what the particle is doing. For a destination with “go,” “come,” or “return,” either may work. For existence or time, use the に pattern you learned. Avoid a blanket rule that every に can become へ, or every へ can become に.

Examples

  • I’m going to school.

  • I’m at school.

  • I’m going home.
