Adjective + noun
Describe something directly: “an expensive car” or “a quiet person.” The word order will feel familiar.

Just as in an expensive car, the Japanese adjective comes before the noun: 高い 車. The new part is how each kind of adjective connects to that noun.
| i-adjective | na-adjective | |
|---|---|---|
| How to connect it | Directly | + な |
| Example | 新しい 本 | 静かな 人 |
The adjective and noun form one noun phrase. You can put that phrase wherever a noun fits: これ は 新しい 車 です means “This is a new car.” Japanese does not need a separate word for English “a.”
Examples
