⚖️ に vs. で
“At home” can describe where you are or where you eat. Japanese distinguishes those roles.

Learn
For these location patterns, に marks where something is or where someone goes, while で marks where an activity happens. The same English “in” or “at” can translate either one.
に:
location or destination
で:
setting of an action
家 に います
I’m at home.
家 で 食べます
I eat at home.
駅 に 行きます
I’m going to the station.
駅 で 待ちます
I’m waiting at the station.
Which should I use?
- にIs this where something exists, or a destination?に marks the location or destination.
- でIs this where an activity takes place?で marks the setting.
Look at the verb and the place’s role, not just the place name. With いる or ある, に marks location; with 行く, it marks destination. With 食べる, 勉強する, or 待つ, で marks the place of the activity. These are the basic patterns, not every possible use of either particle.
Examples
