Frequently asked questions.

Do I need an account?

No. Press Start and begin studying. You can create a free account later to save your progress and use it across your devices.

How much does it cost?

Kyun is currently free. There are no paid features or paid limits inside the app.

Can I use it if I know no Japanese at all?

Yes. If you cannot read hiragana or katakana yet, start with those, one character at a time. If you already know them, go straight to learning vocabulary and grammar through sentences.

What is spaced repetition?

Instead of reviewing every word every day, you review words when you are likely to need them again. As you remember a word, the gap between reviews can grow from days to weeks or months. Kyun schedules this for you with FSRS, the algorithm also used by Anki.

How long does it take to cover N5?

At 10 new words a day, introducing the course vocabulary takes about two and a half months, with grammar along the way. Reviews continue afterward to help the material stick. You can adjust your pace whenever you like.
